The book, which includes Unicode identifiers, is a revision of the book Alphanumeric Identification of Chinese Characters. Like its predecessor, this new release is intended to simplify the identification and learning of Chinese characters and to provide English translations — making it an invaluable resource for English-speaking people who are studying Chinese for business or academic use.

The book includes the characters found in the 1983 edition of the Xiandai Hanyu Cidian and the Ci Hai, plus about 200 characters from other sources, with translations by Joy Zhao Rouzer to complement dictionary definitions. Example characters are written large to simplify recognition of the strokes that are used in identification.

Quick and easy in the subtitle is to emphasize the 4CC (four-corner) indexing system, which according to the author is more efficient than the radical indexing system used in Chinese dictionaries. This index permits the identification of a Chinese character by assigning a digit 0-9 to the type of stroke observed in five positions of the character using a table of stroke types. One uses the five-digit code to look up the code in the numeric index where the pinyin and other attributes accompany the character.
