The Learning Company releases Practice Makes Perfect


The Learning Company announced the release of Practice Makes Perfect. Available for Spanish, French or German, the program helps build foreign language vocabulary and pronunciation skills. More than 2,300 words are included in each program, ranging from fundamental words to the more advanced.

The multimedia features are designed to make learning a foreign language more enjoyable. For example, the program includes colorful photos that illustrate the words, recordings of native speakers, videos and diagrams that show proper tongue and lip placement and numerous interactive learning activities that help increase users' memory of the language. Users also study the target language alphabet, learn to pronounce difficult letter combinations and discover how target words are used in context in sentences. The program features speech-recognition technology (available only in the Windows version) and record/playback features to improve users' language skills.

L&H signs agreement with The Learning Company


Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products N.V., a provider of speech and language technology, products and services, announced that its Speech and Language Solutions Group has entered into a marketing and distribution agreement for the North American market with The Learning Company, a global developer and publisher of consumer software. The agreement was approved by the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in connection with L&H's bankruptcy case.

Under the terms of the agreement, The Learning Company will be the sole distributor, within the United States and Canada, of L&H Voice Xpress and Dragon Naturally Speaking consumer product lines with respect to retail, on-line and direct-to-consumer distribution channels. L&H is currently the leader in the $35 million US retail speech recognition software category with over 70% market share (for the twelve months ending March 31, 2001), according to NPD INTELECT, an independent market research provider. The Learning Company will market, manufacture and distribute current and future versions of L&H Voice Xpress and Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Learn to Speak 8.0 released


The Learning Company announced the release of Learn to Speak 8.0 available in Spanish, French, German and English. Learn to Speak 8.0 is for business people, international travelers, families and students who want to acquire complete and comprehensive foreign language mastery. Version 8 adds a customized language learning system that assists the user in customizing each lesson to fit his or her individual pace, skill and interests.

Additionally, Learn to Speak 8.0 offers access to Internet lessons and content via its Web site http://www.learntospeak.com. The Web site will provide access to ever-changing lessons and content covering hard-to-find topics and real-life situations. The site also provides a personal on-line tutor for specific questions and offers an on-line language study group, thus allowing users to interact and learn from one another.

Learning Company releases QUICKSTUDY


The Learning Company announced the release of QUICKSTUDY, a language software line designed to provide a fast way to speak Spanish, French, German and Italian. The software incorporates the engine and content from The Learning Company's For Everyone language series. Providing users with feedback on their progress in comprehension and pronunciation, QUICKSTUDY uses an on-screen tutor, interactive conversations with onscreen characters and conversation branching, advanced speech recognition, a talking dictionary and a grammar guidebook.

The Learning Company releases Learn to Speak French 6.0


The Learning Company released Learn to Speak French 6.0. The program, featuring speech-recognition technology, understands and evaluates users' pronunciation. The Learn to Speak series is a comprehensive course based on real-life situations. Students learn to speak and understand French by studying vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. Cultural notes, audio recordings and more than one hour of QuickTime movies deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the history, geography and customs of the countries in which the language is spoken.

Travel Talk becomes For Everyone


The Learning Company's language learning program Travel Talk (the Spanish version was reviewed in MultiLingual Communications & Technology #17 Volume 9 Issue 1) has had a name change. The new name is For Everyone, reflecting its target audience of adult casual students and junior high and high school students. For Everyone is available in Spanish, French, German and Italian.
