Bridging Human Expertise and AI: Highlights from AAITE Edu-Con 2025

Long Beach, CA | May 2–3, 2025

Edu-Con 2025, hosted by the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE), once again proved to be a transformative gathering of minds, voices, and hearts committed to advancing language access in education. This year’s theme, “Bridging Human Expertise and AI,” was not just timely, but essential. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape every industry, Edu-Con 2025 offered interpreters and translators a vital space to reflect, learn, and lead with purpose. AAITE brought a much-needed language access perspective to the global AI conversation, making this event truly groundbreaking.

While many conferences explore AI in business, tech, and healthcare, Edu-Con 2025 uniquely centered on its implications for language access within educational settings. It amplified the voices of interpreters, translators, educators, and advocates working directly with students and families, resulting in a two-day journey through innovation, ethics, strategy, and, above all, humanity.

More than a typical professional conference, Edu-Con fostered a profound sense of community. It was an occasion for shared learning, vibrant exchange, invaluable networking, and significantly uplifting the collective spirit. It was also a safe space to voice both the challenges and the joy of the work we do. We laughed. We inspired each other, and, yes, there were even a few tears. The genuine enthusiasm of those present was evident, and for the Board, the occasion served as a heartfelt celebration of our members. Although we wished more had joined us in person, we know that many left inspired and empowered to continue this critical work.

From the opening remarks to the final wrap-up, one message echoed throughout: While AI may be evolving fast, human expertise remains irreplaceable. In the words of keynote speaker Nora Díaz, “We need to stop being invisible.” Her address, “Soft Skills, Strong Future: Leading with Humanity in the Age of AI,” highlighted the critical importance of emotional intelligence, clear communication, and cultural sensitivity—skills that no algorithm can replicate.

Edu-Con 2025 didn’t just talk about adapting to AI—it called on us to forge a powerful partnership with it. Interpreters and translators are not being left behind; we are forging ahead with purpose. As Díaz emphasized, it is not about “human versus machine,” but rather how we integrate AI to amplify what makes us uniquely human.

Voices That Moved Us Forward

Former U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona opened the event with a heartfelt video message acknowledging the indispensable role of interpreters, translators, and educators in advancing language access, equity, and the protection of language rights and cultural heritage in our schools. His words set the stage for a conference fueled by collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to inclusion.

Montserrat Garibay, member of the AAITE Advisory Board and a fierce advocate for multilingual learners and immigrant families, delivered an unforgettable keynote, *“Our Stories, Our Strength.”* She called on us to Identify, Educate, and Mobilize, and reminded everyone that advocacy, beginning with visibility, is not optional but essential.

And of course, this year, we had the honor of recognizing Dr. Bill Rivers for his tireless work advancing policy, awareness, and action in support of language access. He was recognized with the AAITE’s Language Access Award, a small token of gratitude for the enormous impact his leadership continues to make.

Throughout the conference, powerful sessions created a space where real strategies met real-world needs. From cutting-edge tech tools to deep dives on ethics, every speaker and session offered insight we could use immediately.

A central theme of Edu-Con 2025 was a call for professionals to fully recognize and assert their value. The work we do matters, and it demands to be seen. Attendees were encouraged to be vocal on the invaluable skills they bring to the table that AI cannot stay ahead of technology.

But the conference wasn’t all about tools and trends. There were sessions on interpreter wellness, family engagement, and community empowerment that reminded us that language access is about relationships, and these relationships require care. Edu-Con 2025 was an occasion for all of us to come together, share feelings, strategize, and have some fun together. The reception was a joyful moment for everyone. The message was clear: we must nourish each other to nourish our communities.

The Future is Ours to Shape

Edu-Con 2025 wasn’t just another conference—it was a movement. It brought AI into the discussion, and it did so through the eyes and experiences of those who work every day to ensure that families are heard, students are supported, and that all voices are heard.

By putting language access professionals at the center of the AI conversation, AAITE showed what it truly means to lead from the front. We don’t just react to change; we help shape it.

As AI continues to evolve, one truth remains: our ability to listen, connect, and lead with empathy will always be our greatest strength. We look forward to a future where technology amplifies human brilliance, never replaces it.

For when human insight, ethical clarity, and cultural fluency converge with technological innovation, we unlock a future that is not only more efficient but more just, inclusive, and human.

Edu-Con 2025: We came; we connected; and we committed to rising, with each other, and with the times.
