AMN Language Services Hit a Speed Bump—But the Road Ahead Still Looks Promising

A first revenue dip after years of growth

For nearly half a decade, AMN language services were one of AMN Healthcare’s most consistent engines of growth and innovation. Ever since the company acquired remote interpreting provider Stratus Video in 2020 for close to half a billion dollars, the division routinely outperformed other sectors of the business.

But in Q1 2025, that streak came to an end. Revenue from AMN language services dropped to USD 75 million, down from USD 76 million in Q4 2024. While not a dramatic fall, it marks the first time the segment has posted a quarter-over-quarter decline since the acquisition.

Heightened competition and margin pressure

According to AMN CEO Cary Grace, the slowdown can be traced to “heightened competition” driven by recent industry consolidation. “We’ve seen large arrivals and intensified price competition,” Grace told investors, referencing a wave of acquisitions in 2023 and 2024 that included Propio’s expansive buy-and-build strategy. Many companies are already turning to systems of interpretation management in healthcare to optimize costs and quality. “Consolidation, particularly among two or three players, is putting a bit of pressure on margins.”

AMN remains optimistic about the sector

Still, Grace remains bullish. She reaffirmed AMN’s commitment to the sector, describing AMN language services as a “high-growth, high-margin business” and emphasized its continued value to clients across healthcare settings. Importantly, the division hasn’t yet felt the effects of recent policy changes under the Trump administration. “We haven’t seen any slowdown in interest or demand from clients,” Grace said.

A recalibration, not a retreat

While the numbers may suggest a stall, AMN is signaling that its language services arm is far from losing relevance. Instead, the dip may reflect a realignment in a maturing market — one where efficiency, pricing, and strategic partnerships will increasingly define who comes out ahead.
