CLEAR Global / Translators without Borders today launched an urgent fundraising campaign to sustain and expand its life-saving language access programs, following devastating funding shortfalls caused by the recent freeze on U.S. foreign aid. With thousands of vulnerable people at risk of being left without critical information in a language they understand, the organization is calling on corporate sponsors and partners to step up with significant support.
The abrupt halt in U.S. aid has left the humanitarian sector in disarray. Many organizations, including CLEAR Global, are being forced to scale back operations or shut down essential services entirely. The impact will be felt more intensely among marginalized communities, where people often do not speak dominant languages. Without access to information in the languages they understand, affected populations are at even greater risk of harm from health crises to misinformation, displacement, and violence.
“The U.S. aid freeze has left a dangerous gap. And without language access, that gap turns into an abyss. We need bold partners to help us ensure no one is left behind,” said Aimee Ansari, CEO of CLEAR Global. “If aid organizations are forced to cut language support, and if research and technological progress for marginalized languages stalls, we will lose more than services: we will lose lives.”
Programs under threat include language access support for displaced people in northeast Nigeria, digital tools enabling education in the Marma language of Bangladesh, and the world’s first Language Use Data Platform, which maps who speaks what language and where so social impact work can be delivered effectively. These initiatives are already transforming how humanitarian response and development initiatives are delivered, but they now hang in the balance.
CLEAR Global is appealing directly to global language service corporations, individuals and institutions committed to equity, inclusion, and social impact to provide immediate, substantial funding. A donation or a sponsorship package will not only sustain vital programs but ensure that marginalized voices are heard and that no one is excluded simply because of the language they speak.
