Connecting Translators & Interpreters: Highlights from the Fourth CUTI Conference in Uruguay

On September 6-7, 2024, the fourth Congreso Uruguayo de Traducción e Interpretación (CUTI, Uruguayan Translation and Interpretation Conference) took place in Montevideo, Uruguay, as well as virtually, and it was an enriching experience.

Since 2021, translators María Paula Plazas and Sthefani Techera have been organizing this translation conference to create more opportunities for translators, interpreters, localization professionals, and translation students to learn and network, both locally and globally.

And CUTI 2024 delivered just that! Participants exchanged ideas, explored a wide range of topics, and connected with colleagues online and in person.

This year’s event featured twelve educational sessions, covering topics such as project management, audiovisual translation, sign language translation, inclusive language, freelancing, branding, and interpreting, among others. Additionally, there was an active break about ergonomics, networking opportunities, games, raffles, benefits, and plenty of fun!

There were professionals from different countries. Some colleagues from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru attended in person, while others joined us online from Uruguay, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.

A unique feature of this year’s event was the inclusion of interpretation into Brazilian Portuguese, made possible by the excellent work of volunteer interpreters.

Additionally, CUTI received support from various companies and associations, including MultiLingual, which generously provided printed magazines for in-person attendees and offered all participants a one-year digital subscription!

What makes CUTI truly special is its intimate environment. This smaller setting allows for true connections among participants and fosters a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

Looking ahead, CUTI will now be held every two years, with the next edition scheduled for 2026. We look forward to seeing you there!
