Native American languages in the news

Efforts to promote the Penobscot and Pequot languages have been in the news lately in Maine and Connecticut, respectively. And, according to the Norwich Bulletin, “Mashantucket Pequots have discovered they are not alone in their quest to reclaim their language. The tribe is holding a language conference with speakers from all over the country to talk about their projects and the importance of native languages to their cultures.”

In Maine, a bill that would create a Penobscot Language Preservation Fund to maintain and preserve the Penobscot language was introduced in the State Legislature by Representative Michael Sockalexis. An Associated Press article appears at Indian Country among other sites.
