New Products From Samsung and Timekettle Make AI Simultaneous Interpretation Accessible

AI-enabled simultaneous interpretation (SI) is now available to more people than ever, thanks to newly released products from two tech companies. Samsung announced that its new Galaxy S24 smartphone series features a “Live Translate” function, and Timekettle introduced a low-cost handheld device for SI in meetings.

At its “Galaxy Unpacked” launch event today in San Jose, California, Samsung unveiled the SI feature — powered by Google’s Gemini AI models — which allows people who speak different languages to have conversations over the phone. Each person hears a real-time translation of what the other person said.

“It’s like having your own personal interpreter on your calls,” said Samsung VP of Product Management, Drew Blackard, according to TechCrunch

“Live Translate” supports 13 languages and is integrated into the smartphone itself, as opposed to working through an app, which makes it more secure.

Meanwhile, Chinese company Timekettle generated buzz at CES 2024 — the popular consumer technology trade show that took place last week in Las Vegas — when it introduced the X1 Interpreter Hub. The cutting-edge product won the CES Innovation Award in the Headphones & Personal Audio category.

According to the company’s website, the “pocket-size device comes with mighty functions for multilingual communication [and is] ideal for international collaboration.”

Supporting multi-way SI for up to 20 people at a time speaking up to five languages, the X1 system employs AI speech processing, noise cancellation, and of course translation to achieve 95% accuracy in 40 languages and 93 accents. For in-person meetings, users tap their devices together to initiate conversations; for remote meetings, users dial in with a meeting code.

While KUDO may still be the leader in AI-driven SI, Samsung and Timekettle’s technology targets average consumers who need to communicate while traveling, while at work, or in their daily lives — marking a significant step towards bringing SI to the masses.
