ATC-EUATC Ethical Business Summit 21-22 September 2023, London
The Ethical Business Summit asked the question ‘What exactly is ethical, sustainable business in the language services industry?’ A collaboration between the UK’s Association of Translation Companies, and the EUATC, the Summit brought together industry leaders, language service companies, buyers, and technology providers to focus on people and purpose-driven discussions towards sustainability in business.
A sustainable society as one that is environmentally restorative, socially just and economically inclusive – one where sustainable business is about small steps towards progress rather than a quest for perfection. This approach was showcased throughout the Summit with sessions and workshops on sustainable business journeys, case studies and best practices, focusing on taking care of the people and the planet while still making a profit.
The Buyer Panel highlighted the growing drive towards ethical, sustainable business practices in buyer-side procurement and supply chain models, homing in on transparency, collaboration, and corporate social responsibility.
The Summit offered a sneak preview of the 2023 UK Language Industry Survey & Report, with the UK recorded strong overall growth and outpacing the global average, while in 2023, LSCs are feeling the impact of external forces under the sign of ‘wait and see’.
The Summit’s inspirational keynote was delivered by Christos Ellinides from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation, on ethical, sustainable AI for language services from EU perspective.
Ellinides, together with the DGT, is among the leading services for the EC’s work on AI, reminding us that AI brings with it great power, potential and shared responsibility. While developments in AI technology are constant, on-going, and fast, we must never lose sight that our AI-powered services and products need to be controlled by a moral compass and ethical principles.
