The Language Exchange Inc. and Skagit Valley Community College Team Up to Provide Opportunities to Local Students

The Language Exchange Inc., a Washington Language Services Provider that is part of the Language Network Inc. group of companies, and Skagit Valley College (SVC) joined together to provide paid internship opportunities to healthcare interpretation students throughout Washington State.

Not only The Language Exchange but also Skagit Regional Hospital, Peace Health, and North Sound ACH have partnered with SVC to build a 40-hour Healthcare Interpreting Program that strives to develop qualified on-site healthcare interpreters to support the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community of this Western State.

Stacy Harjer, Director of Healthcare Solutions at the Language Network Inc. group stated: “The internship program is key to addressing the shortage of qualified onsite interpreters in Washington State. Healthcare interpreters are in high demand as language access is critical to reducing health disparities, increasing patient health outcomes, and providing access to timely care regardless of language barriers”.

Brittney Maruska, Director of Business and Community Education at Skagit Valley College added: “This collaboration will strengthen and expand language access training, as well as workforce opportunities for bilingual and multilingual individuals to increase certified medical interpreter professionals in the North Sound Region. Our goal is to prepare bilingual and multicultural students to develop the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed for effective language interpretation in healthcare and community settings, all while promoting access to healthcare.”

Also, Jordan Evans, CEO of the Language Network Inc. group, stated that “Interpretation is an integral part of our modern world and often overlooked as a career path! We are proud to support the future generation of professionals that will help our communities function across languages in critical settings such as healthcare”.

The Language Exchange has been delivering onsite interpretation throughout Washington for over 30 years and has now designed and deployed this internship program to support the rising interpretation needs in the healthcare field within the State.

Moreover, SVC, founded in 1926, has established a legacy as a vital educational institution that has played a crucial role in providing accessible higher education, promoting workforce development, and contributing to the cultural and economic development of the region.
