UNESCO Literacy Prizes Calls for 2024 Nominations

UNESCO has announced the opening of nominations for the 2024 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, inviting literacy education experts and nominating organizations worldwide to participate. These awards recognize individuals and organizations for their contributions to literacy education, and this year, the focus is on “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”

In today’s globalized world, where multilingualism is prevalent, adopting a first-language-based, multilingual approach can enhance mutual respect and communal identity. By emphasizing the value of native languages, UNESCO aims to preserve linguistic diversity and promote inclusive, peaceful societies.

Since their inception over 50 years ago, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have celebrated excellence and innovation in literacy. With over 518 projects and programs recognized globally, these awards have honored the dedication and impact of literacy advocates across various sectors. The prizes not only acknowledge the existing work, but also inspire continued efforts towards closing the literacy gap worldwide.

Eligibility and Application Process

The application process is open to governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals committed to advancing literacy through impactful projects and programs. Applications must be submitted to nominating entities, which include the National Commission for UNESCO in the candidate’s country or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO. These entities will then forward the nominations to UNESCO for final consideration.

The evaluation process is overseen by an independent International Jury, comprising five experts who will assess the nominations based on specific criteria. The finalists, selected based on the jury’s recommendations, will be announced on International Literacy Day: September 8, 2024.

Prizes and Recognition

UNESCO awards six laureates each year with two distinguished literacy prizes:

  • The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize: Established in 1989 with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, this prize emphasizes mother language-based literacy development. Each of the three winners receives a medal, a diploma, and US$20,000. This prize highlights the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and empowering communities to engage more fully in global dialogues and cultural exchanges.
  • The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy: Established in 2005 with support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, this prize focuses on functional literacy and leveraging technological environments to support adults in rural areas and out-of-school youth. Each of the three winners receives a medal, a diploma, and US$30,000. This prize underscores the critical role of literacy in a world increasingly shaped by digital technologies.
