Virtual events have become a key platform for global communication, enabling seamless knowledge-sharing and collaboration. However, language barriers remain a significant challenge, often limiting access for non-native speakers and restricting true inclusivity in these digital spaces. Acolad’s extensive experience with all kinds of interpreting scenarios has led us to recognize the critical role of professional interpreting, and more recently, the potential of emerging AI technologies to address these barriers, fostering greater inclusivity and engagement.
In this article, we share one of our success stories showcasing how the right blend of human and AI-driven interpreting can break language barriers and help you better resonate with your audience
Context: The Multilingual Communication Challenge
Our webinar “Live Communication: Where Human Meets AI” addressed globally relevant topics, with participants spanning multiple regions and linguistic backgrounds. While the content was designed to appeal to a global audience, the primary language of the presentation (English) posed a barrier for non-native speakers.
Three key challenges were identified:
- Ensuring equitable access to information for attendees from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Providing real-time language support to maintain the interactive and dynamic nature of the event.
- Preserving the meaning and intent of complex subject matter across multiple languages.
Our mission was to develop an interpreting solution that would enhance accessibility without compromising accuracy or engagement.
Methodology: Implementing Interpreting Solutions
To address these challenges and ensure a seamless experience for both organizers and participants, Acolad implemented an integrated, all-in-one interpreting solution that combined:
- Simultaneous Human Interpreting: Expert interpreters provided real-time remote interpretation, enabling participants to follow the webinar in their preferred language without delays. Beyond literal translation, our interpreters leveraged their deep cultural and linguistic knowledge to ensure that nuanced meanings were effectively conveyed.
- AI-Powered Interpreting: For less critical languages, we incorporated AI-powered interpreting, offering a cost-effective alternative while maintaining real-time accessibility. While AI interpretation is not yet a match for human expertise, it served as a valuable complement—expanding language coverage and enabling a more inclusive event.
- Interpretation Platform: The right webinar platform was selected with interpreting features fully embedded, allowing attendees to easily switch languages in one click without needing additional tools. The team helped identify and implement the right webinar platform and interpretation functionalities. Advanced features like multiple audio channels allowed participants to effortlessly switch between languages, delivering an inclusive and tailored experience for all attendees.
- End-to-End Support – From event planning to execution, Acolad ensured that the interpreting setup was effortless, removing technical barriers for organizers and ensuring a frictionless experience for participants.
Key Outcomes: Inclusivity and Engagement at Its Best
This approach led to several notable outcomes. By offering interpretation in multiple languages, we expanded the audience reach, attracting participants from regions that had previously been underrepresented. This accessibility, in turn, enhanced engagement, as participants reported a better understanding of the material and felt more comfortable contributing to Q&A sessions and discussions. Additionally, the interpreting services received overwhelmingly positive feedback, as in the case of one of our French-speaking attendees who said he was “impressed by how inclusive and engaging the webinar was. The seamless integration of human and AI interpreting created a truly immersive experience. It was interesting to witness how these technologies could work together to break down language barriers and make the event accessible to everyone.”
The future of Multilingual Communication
All this underscores the critical role of interpreting in facilitating effective communication in multilingual contexts. It demonstrates that language support is not merely a logistical consideration but a central component of mutual understanding, inclusivity and engagement. Organizations seeking to connect with diverse audiences can benefit from adopting a strategic approach to interpreting, emphasizing real-time accessibility and cultural relevance.
As global communication increasingly relies on virtual platforms, the demand for solutions that bridge linguistic divides will continue to grow. Interpreting services – and selecting the right tools to support them – offer a powerful means of enabling organizations to engage with multilingual audiences, ensuring that language is not a barrier to participation or understanding. This use case adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the integration of interpreting as a best practice in global communication.
