In addition to the Sarah Maguire Prize, which announced its 2024 winner earlier this month, several other prestigious poetry translation awards recognize exceptional achievements in bringing international poetry to English-speaking audiences.

The Academy of American Poets (AAP) annually awards three prizes for translating poetry collections into English:

• The Ambroggio Prize honors English translations of book-length poetry manuscripts originally written in Spanish with a $1,000 award. This year’s winners were Octavio Quintanilla and Natalia Treviño, who were recognized for their translation of The Impossible Hours. Submissions for the 2025 Ambroggio Prize closed earlier this month.
• The Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards recognize exceptional English translations of modern Italian poetry, awarding a cash prize of $10,000. This year’s winner was Moira Egan, who was honored for her translation of Letters of Black Fire by Giorgiomaria Cornelio. It is currently accepting submissions until February 15, 2025.
• The Harold Morton Landon Translation Award, with a $1,000 prize, recognizes excellence in the translation of a book-length poetry collection from any language into English. This year’s winners were Patrizio Ceccagnoli and Susan Stewart, who were honored for their translation of Historiae by Antonella Anedda. It is currently accepting submissions until February 15, 2025.

Additionally, the National Translation Award (NTA) in Poetry and Prose by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), amounting to $4,000, will be awarded in October during the ALTA47 conference. The NTA is given to outstanding works of poetry in translation and is unique in its process: during their evaluation, the judges take into account the source language text as well as the final translated product. For last year’s Poetry Award, the judges selected Robyn Creswell’s translation from Arabic of Iman Mersal’s The Threshold.

Finally, PEN America — a nonprofit organization advocating for the right to free expression in literature — closed submissions for its 2025 Award for Poetry in Translation just last month. But the organization announced the winner of its 2024 award back in April. The winning title was The Blue House: Collected Works of Tomas Tranströmer, translated from Swedish by Patty Crane. The prize has been awarded since 1996 to a book-length poetry translation from any language and amounts to $3,000.
