Microsoft has unveiled a new voice conversion feature in Azure AI Speech that allows users to transform a recorded voice into a different AI-generated voice — while preserving the original rhythm, tone, and emotional expression. The feature is currently in preview and marks a shift from traditional text-to-speech models toward more dynamic speech-to-speech processing.

Unlike previous approaches that rely on text input, this technology repurposes the intonation and expressiveness of the original audio, changing only the speaker identity. It is initially available in select regions, including Eastern US, Western Europe, and Southeast Asia, and supports 28 EN-US voices also used in Microsoft’s existing speech services.

Aiming for consistency in multilingual dubbing

A key application of the feature is multilingual dubbing. Microsoft notes that localized audio often varies in style and clarity across languages. With voice conversion, all dubbed versions of content can share a single, consistent target voice — offering a more uniform experience across linguistic markets.

In internal testing, Microsoft reports that the system outperformed a leading competitor in Mandarin, producing more natural-sounding and clearer results. In English, the performance was said to be on par.

Customization and implementation options

The feature is also being integrated into Microsoft’s Custom Voice platform, now available in private preview. This extension allows companies to apply voice conversion to their own branded synthetic voices using only limited training data. The approach aims to simplify dynamic voice personalization while maintaining emotional fidelity and consistency.

Nevada Courts Seek Bilingual Candidates Amid Interpreter Shortage

High demand for Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese, and Vietnamese in legal proceedings

Nevada courts are facing an urgent shortage of certified court interpreters, as demand for language access in the state’s legal system continues to grow. In 2024 alone, more than 3,100 court cases required the support of interpreters to help participants navigate legal proceedings, according to a recent statement from the Supreme Court of Nevada.

The state is calling on bilingual residents to consider joining the judicial system as certified court interpreters. Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese, and Vietnamese were the most requested languages last year, yet Nevada currently counts only 79 certified Spanish-language interpreters statewide.

“Court interpreters make the justice system accessible for thousands of Nevadans,” said Amanda Walker, Language Access Program administrator. “We’re asking bilingual residents to be part of this essential public service.”

Fall 2025 exam registration now open

Registration is now open for the Fall 2025 Certified Court Interpreter Exam. Candidates must register by September 22 to participate in the written portion of the exam on October 20. Oral exams will be held in Las Vegas (Nov. 3–7) and Carson City (Nov. 10 and 12), while written exams are scheduled for Nov. 7 in Las Vegas and Nov. 10 in Carson City.

A self-assessment tool is available online to help prospective applicants evaluate their readiness before registering.

Required training and certification process

To become a certified interpreter in Nevada, candidates must complete a Written Orientation Workshop, which will be offered online starting in mid-July. This workshop provides an introduction to Nevada’s court system, interpreting standards, and interpreter ethics.

Applicants must also pass a written exam consisting of 135 multiple-choice questions covering language proficiency, legal terminology, and professional conduct. A minimum score of 80% is required to advance.

Licensed interpreters from other states may also qualify for certification in Nevada, subject to eligibility.

The Unicode Consortium has announced that registration is now open for the third annual Unicode Technology Workshop (UTW), to be held November 11–13, 2025, at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus in California. The event brings together engineers, linguists, developers, and product managers to explore the technologies that support internationalization and localization across global platforms.

Attendees can choose to register for one or both segments of the event: Tutorials Day on November 11 and the main Unicode Technology Workshop from November 12 to 13. Early bird registration is available until August 31 using the code UTW2025Early, with additional discounts for Unicode members.

Focus on internationalization, localization, and text technology

The agenda includes tutorials, seminars, lightning talks, and open discussions centered on Unicode-related technologies. Topics will include i18n libraries, locale data frameworks, globalization tooling, localization pipelines, input methods, and text rendering. The workshop aims to provide attendees with tools and insights to better support multilingual users and address complex internationalization challenges.

The Unicode Consortium also opened a call for submissions for those interested in presenting at UTW 2025. Google is once again under scrutiny after reports surfaced that Gmail’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered translation feature is altering the content of emails in German — without users’ consent or even awareness. The issue was first identified by German journalists who discovered that email newsletters sent in German were being silently “corrected” or retranslated by Gmail’s backend AI systems, resulting in unexpected and sometimes offensive changes.

This unexpected intervention has raised serious concerns over user control, AI hallucinations, and the broader implications of machine translation embedded invisibly into essential digital services.

When AI Oversteps Its Role

Among the most striking errors reported was the automatic translation of the German word “Ass”— used in a political context to describe a strategic move — as “Arsch,” an explicit term in English. Other cases showed phrases like “Ukrainian positions” being reinterpreted as “American positions,” and references to the “Israeli army” appearing instead as “Russian army.” These are not trivial typos, but significant distortions of meaning that can have diplomatic, journalistic, and professional consequences.

The source of the issue appears to be Gmail’s difficulty in processing mixed-language content, particularly when HTML formatting includes English tags or code. In trying to make sense of these signals, the AI seems to retrigger translation functions—even when the original content is already in the user’s preferred language.

A Wake-Up Call for AI in Communication

While Google has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix, the rollout is expected to take several weeks. For now, millions of Gmail users — especially those outside the English-speaking world — remain vulnerable to these silent alterations.

This incident highlights a broader challenge in the localization and language tech space: As AI becomes more deeply embedded in everyday tools, the potential for invisible errors grows. Human oversight, clear user settings, and transparency must remain central to how AI is deployed — especially in something as fundamental as written communication.

Understanding the Crucial Role of a Pivot Interpreter

Pivot interpreters are professionals who interpret via an intermediate language due to the absence of direct interpreters between rare language pairs. Pivot interpreting has a wide variety of use cases, including refugee settlement, disaster response, and international relations. Pivot interpreting often saves lives in time-sensitive situations in which direct interpretation between two languages is not possible or effective. For example, pivot interpreting helped Doctors Without Borders respond to a cholera outbreak in South Sudan in 2023; additionally, the International Organization for Migration relied on pivot interpreting to address the migrant crisis in Libyan detention centers between 2019 and 2021. 

Pivot interpreting has been practiced for centuries, dating back to Hernán Cortés’s conquest of Mexico in the 16th century when communication flowed from Spanish to Yucatec Maya, and then to Nahuatl with the help of two interpreters. However, the term did not become mainstream until the early 2000s with advancements in computational linguistics and machine translation (MT) research. The term has since been defined by United Nations interpreting protocols and non-governmental organization (NGO) field manuals. 

Most of the time, English is used as the de facto pivot language followed by another common language — such as Spanish — due to the rich bilingual corpora, resource availability, and cost effectiveness it holds. However, as noted by Kinki University School of Science and Engineering’s 2009 research results on pivot language selection, English proved to be an effective pivot for only 45.5% of 110 languages, while it was outperformed by Asian languages as the stand-in pivot. This proves that, while English may fit the bill the majority of the time, it’s always important to assess each situation to determine the best pivot language.

While pivot interpreters generally hold the same qualifying credentials as regular simultaneous or consecutive interpreters, the industry currently lacks the ability to explicitly train or assess pivot-interpreting skills such as multi-hop relay accuracy, semantic drift management, or cognitive load balancing. These unique professionals work with a set of specialized skills that are largely acquired through hands-on assignments, as they are currently not certifiable. 

Franz Pöchhacker notes in his book Introducing Interpreting Studies that most official reports lump pivot interpreting under general “multilingual interpretation” or “relay interpreting,” and that the role is largely undocumented in service logs. This is particularly noticeable in humanitarian, emergency, or immigration settings where only the starting and ending languages — not the pivot language — are mentioned. Increased awareness of this important interpreting role could lead to more recognition and better record-keeping in the years to come.
