AI Translation Is Driving Chinese Literature Beyond Borders

A Global Boom Powered by AI

Chinese online literature’s international audience leapt from 230 million in 2023 to 352 million in 2024, according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China Literature. This surge reflects how AI-driven translation is demolishing language barriers, making sprawling web novels instantly accessible to global readers across genres, formats, and languages.

Markets No One Saw Coming

Overseas revenue hit ¥5.07 billion (≈ USD 700 million), a 25% year-on-year jump. Spanish-language editions alone rose 227%, while German, French, and Portuguese translations went from virtually zero to hundreds of titles. Japan led growth in registered users with an astonishing 180% increase, followed by Greece, Spain, and Brazil as rapidly expanding readership hubs.

Markets once considered fringe are now central to China’s literary expansion strategy, fueled by the scale and speed of AI translation.

AI and Cost Savings: At What Price?

Leveraging AI, China Literature translated more novels in 2024 than in all previous years combined, slashing translation costs by over 90%. Yet human translators face shrinking fees—many relegated to polishing AI drafts, with incomes dropping by up to half. Critics warn machine output still struggles with cultural nuance, risking quality for quantity.

Some readers have begun noticing odd phrasing or tonal shifts, prompting questions about how much is lost in machine-rendered adaptation.

Beyond Digital Pages

China Literature’s overseas licensing deals climbed 80% in 2024, and adaptations amassed 1.237 billion views on YouTube. As Yang Chen, vice president of China Literature, noted, “AI-generated video could trigger the next revolution in visual content—our vast library of web fiction is primed to become Hollywood’s new playground.”

From Korean dramas to Chinese webtoons, the entertainment industry is watching closely how AI translation reshapes transmedia storytelling.

Protecting Original Authorship

On April 28, 16 major web fiction platforms—including China Literature, Jinjiang Literature City, and iReader—signed a self-regulation pact to ensure AI tools respect authors’ copyrights. The agreement underscores the growing need for responsible AI-assisted creation that honors literary origins and maintains authorial intent.

Looking Ahead

Industry leaders are watching closely as new AI tools emerge, promising both greater speed and more immersive localized storytelling. Balancing efficiency with cultural fidelity and fair compensation will determine whether this translation revolution uplifts both stories and storytellers—or leaves authors behind in the process.

KUDO Returns to Power InfoComm 2025 with Expanded AI Speech Translation Coverage

0

(Tuesday, May 27, 2025, New York City, NY) – Building on last year’s successful collaboration, KUDO will return as the official AI Speech Translation provider for InfoComm 2025, expanding its coverage to include all presentations, keynotes, and discussion panels across 3 specialized stages, as well as all Education sessions and Manufacturers’ Training sessions in 20 rooms throughout the event.

InfoComm, North America’s premier professional audiovisual trade show and conference taking place June 7-13, 2025, will once again offer attendees a fully language-accessible experience. Content from every session will be available in multiple languages by simply scanning a QR code with smartphones or tablets, breaking down language barriers and enhancing the experience for international attendees, ensuring language differences no longer limit access to cutting-edge knowledge, technical expertise, and valuable networking opportunities.

“After the overwhelmingly positive response to our language accessibility initiative last year, we’re thrilled to expand our partnership with KUDO for InfoComm 2025,” says Annette Sandler, Sr. Director, Live Content US/Canada of AVIXA. “With KUDO’s technology supporting all of our presentation stages and education rooms, we’re taking another significant step toward creating the most inclusive and accessible professional AV event in the world, ensuring that language is never a barrier to professional development and industry innovation.”

“Our continued collaboration with InfoComm represents the perfect integration of language technology with audiovisual innovation,” says Fardad Zabetian, CEO of KUDO. “By providing comprehensive language accessibility across all InfoComm 2025 sessions, we’re enabling attendees to fully immerse themselves in the educational experience, enhance their technical expertise, and build valuable connections regardless of their native language.”

Designed for ease of use during live events, KUDO AI requires no app download or account creation; scanning the QR code opens a new browser window from which attendees can select both an audio and captions language, depending on whether they wish to follow the translated speech or simply read the subtitles directly from their screen. Translated audio and captions are entirely AI-powered, in real time, and require around 1% of the bandwidth needed to stream an average YouTube video from a smartphone, making them easily accessible via 4G or the guest Wi-Fi available at the event’s venue.

KUDO’s patented language solutions are continuously evolving, incorporating feedback from real-world implementations like InfoComm to enhance accuracy, reduce latency, and expand language options. This commitment has cemented KUDO’s position as the leader in language accessibility technology across multiple sectors including the events industry, government and international institutions, and houses of worship.

Boostlingo Releases “Interpreter Availability” to Simplify Scheduling

0
Boostlingo

Austin, Texas – May 23, 2025 – Boostlingo has released Interpreter Availability, a new feature within its Interpreter Management System (IMS) designed to streamline scheduling by replacing spreadsheets and third-party calendars with a real-time, shareable interpreter schedule.

With this new feature, interpreters can set their weekly working hours, indicate single-day changes, and mark availability as Remote, On-Site, Both, or Unavailable. A built-in notes field allows interpreters to add location-specific context such as “Building 1 all day,” giving schedulers clearer insight into interpreter logistics and preferences.

Administrators and language service staff can view this availability data live within the IMS portal. Filters for modality, availability status, and location enable more efficient scheduling. Any updates made are instantly reflected in the Appointment Viewer, allowing schedulers to confirm availability before sending assignments—reducing booking errors, interpreter fatigue, and last-minute cancellations.

“Our customers told us that guessing interpreter availability was one of their biggest operational challenges,” said Brian D’Agostino, VP of Product at Boostlingo. “Interpreter Availability delivers immediate clarity within IMS, with no reliance on external calendars or tools.”

Each calendar update is time-stamped to provide a complete audit trail, which is useful for tracking paid time off, managing compliance, and maintaining transparent scheduling processes. The feature also supports collaboration across multiple departments within an organization.

Interpreter Availability is included in the latest IMS release at no additional cost and is being rolled out to all current customers. Bulk editing capabilities for multi-interpreter schedules are expected in a future update.

An informational webinar offering a deeper look at Interpreter Availability is scheduled for the coming weeks. Details and registration are available at boostlingo.com.

Bridging Human Expertise and AI: Highlights from AAITE Edu-Con 2025

0

Long Beach, CA | May 2–3, 2025

Edu-Con 2025, hosted by the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE), once again proved to be a transformative gathering of minds, voices, and hearts committed to advancing language access in education. This year’s theme, “Bridging Human Expertise and AI,” was not just timely, but essential. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape every industry, Edu-Con 2025 offered interpreters and translators a vital space to reflect, learn, and lead with purpose. AAITE brought a much-needed language access perspective to the global AI conversation, making this event truly groundbreaking.

While many conferences explore AI in business, tech, and healthcare, Edu-Con 2025 uniquely centered on its implications for language access within educational settings. It amplified the voices of interpreters, translators, educators, and advocates working directly with students and families, resulting in a two-day journey through innovation, ethics, strategy, and, above all, humanity.

More than a typical professional conference, Edu-Con fostered a profound sense of community. It was an occasion for shared learning, vibrant exchange, invaluable networking, and significantly uplifting the collective spirit. It was also a safe space to voice both the challenges and the joy of the work we do. We laughed. We inspired each other, and, yes, there were even a few tears. The genuine enthusiasm of those present was evident, and for the Board, the occasion served as a heartfelt celebration of our members. Although we wished more had joined us in person, we know that many left inspired and empowered to continue this critical work.

From the opening remarks to the final wrap-up, one message echoed throughout: While AI may be evolving fast, human expertise remains irreplaceable. In the words of keynote speaker Nora Díaz, “We need to stop being invisible.” Her address, “Soft Skills, Strong Future: Leading with Humanity in the Age of AI,” highlighted the critical importance of emotional intelligence, clear communication, and cultural sensitivity—skills that no algorithm can replicate.

Edu-Con 2025 didn’t just talk about adapting to AI—it called on us to forge a powerful partnership with it. Interpreters and translators are not being left behind; we are forging ahead with purpose. As Díaz emphasized, it is not about “human versus machine,” but rather how we integrate AI to amplify what makes us uniquely human.

Voices That Moved Us Forward

Former U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona opened the event with a heartfelt video message acknowledging the indispensable role of interpreters, translators, and educators in advancing language access, equity, and the protection of language rights and cultural heritage in our schools. His words set the stage for a conference fueled by collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to inclusion.

Montserrat Garibay, member of the AAITE Advisory Board and a fierce advocate for multilingual learners and immigrant families, delivered an unforgettable keynote, *“Our Stories, Our Strength.”* She called on us to Identify, Educate, and Mobilize, and reminded everyone that advocacy, beginning with visibility, is not optional but essential.

And of course, this year, we had the honor of recognizing Dr. Bill Rivers for his tireless work advancing policy, awareness, and action in support of language access. He was recognized with the AAITE’s Language Access Award, a small token of gratitude for the enormous impact his leadership continues to make.

Throughout the conference, powerful sessions created a space where real strategies met real-world needs. From cutting-edge tech tools to deep dives on ethics, every speaker and session offered insight we could use immediately.

A central theme of Edu-Con 2025 was a call for professionals to fully recognize and assert their value. The work we do matters, and it demands to be seen. Attendees were encouraged to be vocal on the invaluable skills they bring to the table that AI cannot stay ahead of technology.

But the conference wasn’t all about tools and trends. There were sessions on interpreter wellness, family engagement, and community empowerment that reminded us that language access is about relationships, and these relationships require care. Edu-Con 2025 was an occasion for all of us to come together, share feelings, strategize, and have some fun together. The reception was a joyful moment for everyone. The message was clear: we must nourish each other to nourish our communities.

The Future is Ours to Shape

Edu-Con 2025 wasn’t just another conference—it was a movement. It brought AI into the discussion, and it did so through the eyes and experiences of those who work every day to ensure that families are heard, students are supported, and that all voices are heard.

By putting language access professionals at the center of the AI conversation, AAITE showed what it truly means to lead from the front. We don’t just react to change; we help shape it.

As AI continues to evolve, one truth remains: our ability to listen, connect, and lead with empathy will always be our greatest strength. We look forward to a future where technology amplifies human brilliance, never replaces it.

For when human insight, ethical clarity, and cultural fluency converge with technological innovation, we unlock a future that is not only more efficient but more just, inclusive, and human.

Edu-Con 2025: We came; we connected; and we committed to rising, with each other, and with the times.
