Reddit’s expansion of its machine translation (MT) feature builds on an earlier rollout for French-speaking users and includes new countries such as Brazil and Spain. According to a blog on the company website, the update is designed to improve accessibility, allowing Reddit users to read user-generated content in their preferred language automatically. Powered by machine learning, Reddit’s MT functionality is expected to evolve and become more accurate as users interact with it.

Posts and comments written in a community’s original language can be converted to a user’s set language. For example, a Reddit user in Spain can now engage with French-language discussions without needing to manually translate each comment or post. Similarly, content posted in the user’s preferred language will be translated for others in the community, promoting more dynamic multilingual exchanges.

Users in Brazil and Spain are among the first to experience the feature, with expansions planned for Germany, Italy, the Philippines, and parts of Latin America in the coming weeks. The MT functionality works across all Reddit platforms, including the mobile app, desktop, and mobile web versions.

In an article on TechCrunch, author Paul Sawers connects the MT rollout with Reddit’s decision to go public seven months ago. “Although the company has said its user base and ad revenue continue to grow, the most obvious conduit for attracting a larger base is to make all its content available in more languages,” Sawers writes.

Reddit is also working to ensure its content appears more frequently in search results for languages other than English. While the full list of supported languages has yet to be confirmed, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish are currently available, and users can switch between translated and original content through the overflow menu. An additional update, expected soon, will display banners identifying translated posts — with options to view the original version.
