Women in the Language Industry
Curated by Marjolein Groot Nibbelink
According to Zippia, 60.6% of translators are women, and 39.4% of translators are men. At the same time, press releases and public debate in our industry are often led by — and conducted around — men. There’s nothing wrong with highlighting influential and good men, of course, but we feel it’s not only sensible but even necessary to create a space to put some amazing women in the spotlight, supported by the greater language industry community. In total, 236 women agreed to be included in the vote, every nominee received at least four votes, and the final results were not far apart. All who were nominated and did not make the cut will be included in the 2024 vote.
Common reasons shared in support of the 30 amazing women in this issue are competency and keeping a humble stance in their powerful positions. A gentle nature, kindness, and quiet willingness to do impactful work set these women apart from their peers this year. Unpacking these characteristics, some of them could be considered as traditionally feminine traits — ones that have been encouraged in women for all of known history. “Humble” is used seven times in the following 60 pages and has a more feminine connotation than “fearless,” which is used just once. Empathetic leadership — “empath” is used 10 times — and motherhood (“mother” mentioned six times) comes up as well. Again, one may wonder if this is a result of permeating classic gender-roles, or if these truly are the unique women-specific values we need to applaud. No matter the answer — the recognitions are clear and genuine.
Listed and praised with equal fervor, are strong-minded women, pushing boundaries and speaking up for what they believe in. “Strong” is said 25 times, with an additional six notes of “strength.” “Empowering” and “powerful” are used as descriptors another 25 times again. It’s wonderful to see that woman leadership is no longer solely confined to traditional concepts of womanhood, even though one style of leadership may make life in the limelight easier compared to the other. So let’s not confuse humility with shame and strength with dominance — instead, let’s celebrate these women for who they are, both individually and as flag bearers for all women globally. Some have been around for a long time while others are just entering their professional careers. For now, these are the top 30 of the language industry for 2023, listed alphabetically.
