POST EDITING

Y

ou may have noticed some changes on the MultiLingual masthead recently. It’s a brand new year, and with it, we’re doing things a little differently around here. And I think you’ll find only improvements trailing in its wake.

Last month, my colleague Cathy Martin introduced herself as MultiLingual’s new managing editor. Over the past few months I’ve worked with Cathy, I’ve been nothing but impressed by her professional rigor, thoroughness, and intelligence. Cathy coming on board means I get to spend more time on the parts of my job I love — namely, writing and editing — so to better describe my role, my new title is senior writer and editor.

Likewise, we’re honoring two very special individuals this month: Aki Ito and Jost Zetzsche. Both individuals have served for years on MuliLingual’s editorial board, and their wisdom and guidance have been invaluable in understanding a complicated and ever-evolving industry. We’ll have more details to come once we’re ready to announce their replacements, but for now, please join us as we share our deepest gratitude to two of the language industry’s most influential voices.

Speaking of influence, that’s what this issue is all about! Regardless of what social media platform you frequent, you know the effectiveness of combined reach and savvy communication. In a way, it’s an elegant encapsulation of the power of language — by simply understanding their audiences, influencers by the thousands have built new careers for themselves, and in doing so, they’ve changed communication and marketing forever. The language industry is just as dependent on influencers as any other, and in this issue, we asked you — yes, you! — who has the greatest impact on your work and life.

Whether you aspire to influence people by the millions or simply your colleagues and loved ones, honesty, humility, selflessness, and integrity are still the four corners of any career. We here at MultiLingual will endeavor to reflect those values with the influence we wield.
